Yoga and Pet Therapy Wellness Workshop

Mary & Liza

Tuesday, April 29, 2025

Mark your calendars for the next Swarthmore Senior Citizens Association Wellness Workshop Tuesday afternoon, April 29 from 1:15-3:15. Mary Thompson, Director of Health and Wellness at Park Avenue Community Center will be educating us about how yoga is good for aging. The practice of yoga can improve balance, flexibility, and strength while the breathing component of yoga alleviates stress. A recent Consumers Report article on natural cures states that yoga is recommended to treat back pain, achy joints, sleep problems, mental health, heart problems, and digestive issues! Mary will lead us through some yoga exercises designed for seniors, using a chair.

The second part of the Wellness Workshop will focus on dog therapy: what it is, what training is needed, and certification. Mary is a certified pet therapist and she will bring her dog golden retriever Liza to demonstrate how pet therapy can benefit humans. She says Liza is training in a sport called canine nose work, which is based on professional detection dog techniques. Liza will also be available for much petting and attention!

A $10 registration fee will be collected; these fees will be donated to Providence Animal Shelter in Media.
